The new TOEFL is fully computer-based with a US-academic style and no human examiner; IELTS has a face-to-face Speaking test and independent per-skill bands (a weak Speaking score doesn't drag your Writing). Note the new TOEFL (Jan 2026) is a genuinely different test from the old one — old prep doesn't apply. Take a practice test of each before deciding.

TOEFL vs IELTS — common questions

Is TOEFL accepted for Canada PR?
No — TOEFL iBT is not accepted. IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP General and PTE Core for Express Entry. TOEFL iBT is for university admission, not Canadian PR. A separate test, TOEFL Essentials, was added to IRCC's designated list in August 2025 for economic immigration, but IRCC is not yet accepting its scores — don't use it for a PR application until IRCC publishes an official start date and CLB conversion. Confirm current status on IRCC.

Yes — on 21 January 2026 TOEFL moved to a new 1.0–6.0 band scale (overall = the average of the four sections), with adaptive Reading/Listening and new Speaking and Writing tasks, ~90 minutes, results in ~72 hours. Prep from before then is obsolete.
